Student Capstone Projects

Smart Windows

The smart window capstone project was aimed at building an innovative window system. This features smart blinds that adjust automatically to changing sunlight and temperature; reducing energy consumption.

The sponsor for this project was Dr. Bing Chen, and its duration was 2022 - 2023.

Thermal Water Storage

This project' goal was to design a thermal water storage control system. THis system can monitor the water for temperatures for the SSH.

The sponsor for this project was Dr. Bing Chen, and its duration was 2022 - 2023.

Active Cooling/Heating Circulation Control

This project' goal was to design an automated circulation system for active supplemental cooling and heating of the SSH.

The sponsor for this project was Dr. Bing Chen, and its duration was 2021 - 2022.

Water Control System

This project' goal was to design a device which collects rainwater and recyled gray water throughout the assisted living unit. The system utilizes a programmable logic controller to operate valves and a PCB to monitor power consumption.

The sponsor for this project was Dr. Bing Chen, and its duration was 2020 - 2021.

ELSA (Elder Longevity Support Apparatus)

This project' goal was to design a telepresence system that enables elderly/disabled people to live independently by giving caretakers and family members the ability to visit them virtually while also monitoring their health. This system included a camera and screen mounted on the device so the elderly could communicate with outside individuals.

The sponsor for this project was Dr. Bing Chen, and its duration was 2019 - 2020.

Radar Based Fall Detection

Currently In Progress Capstone

This project' goal is to design and construct a device capable of detecting when an elderly person falls over in the SSH and is in need of assistance (cannot get up on their own). The system will use RADAR data sent thorugh a continually operating neural network which has been trained to detect fall patterns. The device will then be able to provide emergency services with a phone call should the patient either ask verbally for help, or be unresponsive after a fall.

The sponsor for this project is Dr. Bing Chen, and its duration was 2023 - 2024.
